The location and layout of this context, built in this sought after residential area of Volta Mantovana, where there are easily accessible roads especially by bicycle to connect from Volta Mantovana to Valeggio sul Mincio, Peschiera del Garda and Mantova. Overlooking the Mincio Valley, Volta Mantovana lies at the foot of the medieval castle. Finds from the 5th-4th centuries B.C. at Cereta suggest the area was already frequented during the Iron Age.

It is assumed that the castle is of early medieval foundation, but it certainly exists at the end of the 10th century when it became part of the Canossa defense system. The castle reached its final arrangement in the 14th and 15th centuries: formed by a wall and related moat, inside it houses the church, the small village as well as a more internal fortress defending the keep and another tower to the south that has been recovered today. Also fortified are the entrance gates, in particular the "Porta Mantovana" on which a rather elegant Gothic arch stands out.

Also dating from the mid-15th century is Palazzo Gonzaga, built close to the city walls - incorporating even a tower - by the marquises of Mantua Ludovico Gonzaga and Barbara of Brandenburg as a country villa. In 1515 it was donated to the Guerrieri family, vicars in Volta of the Gonzagas themselves with the task of directly controlling and administering the whole area on behalf of the lords of Mantua. It is currently the municipal seat. Inside the complex, in the former Casa del Gardiniere, there is an infopoint that houses a tasting and refreshment point for the promotion of the tourist and food and wine values of the area, renowned for the excellence of its local wines.
